Mode
The mode is a measure of central tendency that identifies the most frequently occurring value in a dataset.
What is the mode?
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. Unlike the mean and median, the mode is based entirely on frequency.
How to calculate the mode
Count how often each value appears. The value with the highest frequency is the mode.
A dataset may have:
- One mode (unimodal)
- Two modes (bimodal)
- More than two modes (multimodal)
- No mode if no values repeat
Example
How to interpret the mode
The mode is especially useful for categorical or discrete data. It shows the most common value.
Mode vs Mean & Median
The mean uses all values. The median uses ordered position. The mode uses frequency.

FAQ – Mode
Can a dataset have more than one mode?
Yes. It can be bimodal or multimodal.
When should I use the mode?
When identifying the most common value, especially in categorical data.
